This Friday I completed my first mini marathon; I say first since I plan on doing many more.
I really enjoy running but due to some injuries I really haven’t been as physically active as I used to be during my university days; we had football training sessions and tournaments on a regular basis.
I missed running; for some reason it felt freeing as it didn’t really take anything from me instead it just gave! I felt happy while running, everything else didn’t really matter it was just me and my music while I hit the treadmill of my gym or the streets of Dubai.
With this love for running came the desire to run a mini marathon, and when the opportunity presented itself in the form of an email, I said to myself I am definitely going to doing it and would not let any excuse come my way.
However, I still wasn’t really physically active, which led me to doubt myself, questioning whether I would be able to complete it or not! But I just had one thought throughout; and it was that in order to overcome this self doubt I’ll certainly have to seek discomfort, since only when we do that do we push ourselves to achieve things we never imagined we could.
Being in that zone of self doubt mixed with the excitement of running my first mini marathon kept my hopes high. As a result I successfully completed it within 34 mins. It really did feel amazing crossing that finish line because it didn’t just indicate the completion of my first good run but also proved to me that if I put my mind to something no matter what the odds are I can always turn things around.
I would also like to throw some light on the event itself. There were more than 70k people who showed up all together to run and support the Dubai 30×30 initiative which indeed does make Dubai the most active city within this time period. Also the manner with which RTA(Dubai Roads & Transport Authorities) and the #Dubai police worked together was commendable as well. All the sponsors and the ushers who came to work at 3am in the morning to set up the water stations and make sure everything runs smoothly just showed us how well this city of gold can come together for a common goal.
Overall, it was a massive event carried out by the help and determination of a lot of people and I strongly believe that the positiveness behind the whole campaign was a major factor that led to its success.
